i’m a dad and i’ve had to accept that the most dangerous person to my kid didn’t sneak in through a back door they came straight through a phone screen my kid wasn’t chasing trouble they were just on tiktok scrolling through lives until they landed on one that seemed harmless at first all smiles quick jokes playful battles nothing out of the ordinary but little by little i saw the signs the phone started going everywhere even to the table angled away when i walked by i’d hear the streamer say my kid’s name like they were part of the show like they were more important than the rest of the chat that kind of targeted praise isn’t random it’s deliberate and it works then came the late night messages the kind that are timed perfectly for when a kid is alone tired and more likely to open up messages that drip feed validation you’re different from the rest you get me i can trust you with things others wouldn’t understand and then the warning shot disguised as loyalty don’t tell your parents they wouldn’t get it all wrapped up in inside jokes to make it feel safe and special my kid started treating those lives like an obligation showing up on time being there for every battle and that’s where the money came in the streamer hides it behind the easy out you don’t have to gift but the way the whole chat works makes not gifting feel like betrayal phrases like real ones always come through or we’re so close just one more push turn it into a challenge my kid burned through their allowance then started looking for ways to get more because they believed that winning a battle for this streamer mattered more than sleep homework or hanging out with friends and the scariest part is how clean it all looks to anyone not paying attention you’d see a smiling face a busy chat some coins flashing on screen but underneath is a system built to isolate a kid make them keep secrets tie their worth to spending money and keep them in that loop as long as possible this isn’t content this is a machine designed to pull kids in hold them there and make them believe leaving means losing everything
